The Principles of the Pilates Method

"When all your muscles are properly developed you will perform your work with minimum effort and  maximum pleasure"

Joseph H. Pilates

The Pilates Method is a set of principles and corrective exercises, using specialised equipment, which works the whole body in balance, co-ordinating the upper and lower musculature with the body's centre.

Based upon a well constructed philosophical foundation, the core of the method is 'awareness of your own body'.

Each exercise is built around its eight key principles:

                     Relaxation
                     Concentration
                     Breathing
                     Centering
                     Alignment
                     Co-ordination
                     Flowing Movements
                    Stamina

The Pilates Method is a complete fitness regime which, when performed regularly, positively changes bodies, targeting the key postural muscles and building strength from the inside out.

Focusing on breathing correctly, the exercises dramatically improve strength, flexibility, posture and co-ordination.

What makes Pilates unique among similar forms of exercise is that it slims the muscles, making them strong but more compact. By developing slenderness rather than bulk, full range of movement in the joints is maintained. The outcome is a well-balanced body which is strong and supple, with a flatter stomach, balanced arms and legs and a protected spine.

By carefully mobilising and releasing tension in the muscles, the body fluids will circulate more freely, endorphins will be released into the cells and make you feel more vitalised, relaxed and confident with a sense of well being.
